About The Smart Advice
I’m Joel, a college graduate with a Bachelors and Master’s engineering degree looking to make sense of the world.
Since I was in college I’ve experimented with side hustles, starting businesses, coaching high school and college sports. Recently I’ve been working at a huge blog.
But this isn’t about me. It’s about all the time, energy and resources I’ve wasted to try and figure out why life after college was so hard.
It’s about the countless nights lying awake because I was dreading going to work in the morning. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, so if you keep pushing forward then you’ll find everything you’re looking for.
Why We Exist
The Smart Advice exists because there’s way more to life than what schools teach us.
We’re all being lied to about what “success” actually means. School is not the only way to be successful, it’s not the only way to be secure with your future.
In fact I would argue that a typical career is the least safe thing you can do. I hope to guide you on your journey to never be fired again, because you have the skills to work for yourself.
You don’t need to go to Silicon Valley and run yourself into an early grave. I hope to show you how it’s possible to leave your 9 to 5, finally feel at peace with your life and live it on your own terms.
Where We Want You to Go
You need skills…if you don’t have them already. Look…we’ve been taught that a piece of paper (a college degree) is how you get ahead.
And that, couldn’t be more wrong. When you have skills that companies want to pay for then you’re never out of a job.
It’s possible to stop being afraid of where your next paycheck is coming from. And my goal with this blog is to help you see the potential in being able to work for yourself.
The Smart Advice Mindset
The only person that can save for your retirement is you.
And the only person that cares about your well being is you. So part of the mindset we need to develop is that only you're going to help yourself.
There's no secret pill or formula. Take what you learn here and go apply it in the real world for yourself. I'm looking for readers that are going to read something and immediately do something with it.
There's only 3 things I ask of you:
If you do these 3 things every single time you learn something you will pull yourself out of any situation you're in. There's no substitute for hard work and there's no substitute for taking action.
So, start learning!
Our mindset is to not stop taking action until we're waking up, jumping out of bed and doing what we love.
You're never alone. I want to walk along this journey with you and answer any question you might have. Don't hesitate to reach out and share your story.
